What is the Screening Choices Programme?

Screening Choices is a in-depth education programme commissioned by the UK NSC to meet the needs of a range of health professionals offering antenatal and newborn care. It was produced by the Cambridge based partnership of HSHS (formerly Homerton School of Health Studies) and Jill Rogers Associates.

The programme aims to enhance skills and knowledge needed to ensure women and their families can make informed choices about offers of screening. Many of these choices are stressful and raise anxieties and dilemmas. Health professionals play a vital role in helping women to understand the options available to them and the consequences of different choices, and to support them without directing their decisions. The programme is in its 2nd edition, dated November 2005 and now forms part of many pre and post registration professional education programmes.

In addition Screening Choices offers organisations a way to meet their policy goals by ensuring staff have the necessary skills to offer appropriate antenatal and newborn screening choices to women and families safely. The content has been mapped against a range of NHS initiatives to demonstrate how the learning materials can support both the:

  • Implementation of NHS strategy and policy within organisations
  • Professional development of individual practitioners
